Chetwoods major refurbishment of this Grade II* Listed former flax mill revealed the historic fabric of the Mill whilst creating a distinctive blend of contemporary features in one of the city’s most significant heritage buildings.

Chetwoods secured two full planning approvals and Listed Building consents and delivered a major refurbishment to provide a high quality reception area and office accommodation whilst reinvigorating the bleak and confusing visitor journey to the building.

Works to the reception included a comprehensive redesign and refurbishment of the internal spaces to rationalise and modernise the reception area. Externally a new seven metre double height fully glazed timber framed vestibule became a key feature of the works providing a new high quality signature entrance for the Mill to house a series of changing large scale illuminated art installations.

The completed scheme succeeded in raising the profile of the building, securing values, and acted as a driver for the future development and delivery of the client’s masterplan for the site.
