The refurbishment and extension of the Grade II listed Kilbracken Boarding House at Rugby School formed part of the school’s ongoing programme to enhance its boarding facilities in line with modern standards and requirements while preserving its historical integrity.

The project introduced key internal modifications alongside two external extensions to create additional space. Minor landscaping improvements at the main entrance, including relocated parking, enhanced both safety and the overall aesthetic of the building's setting.

A major challenge of the refurbishment was replacing the original dormitories with 56 en-suite bedrooms spread across two storeys. Communal areas were reconfigured and are now exclusively housed within a spacious ground-floor setting, fostering a strong sense of community and providing students with flexible, welcoming spaces for both social interaction and focused study.

The architectural design harmonises with the existing structure, with new windows and dormers carefully arranged to match the proportions and levels of the original building. Materials were meticulously selected to complement the historic setting, including brickwork that matches the original structure, terracotta hanging tiles in a geometric pattern incorporating fishtail and bullnose formats, and standing-seam zinc roofing - previously used successfully on other Rugby School estate projects.

Sustainability was at the heart of the refurbishment, with high-performance insulation, low U-value windows, and upgraded lighting and heating systems integrated to improve energy efficiency. These enhancements ensure the building meets modern environmental standards while maintaining its historic character.
