People & Offices

We’re only as good as our people. That’s why our studios in London and Birmingham are led by inspiring, insightful directors who know how to get the best out of their teams.

They combine creativity with practicality — not only generating ideas, but being able to get them done. We nurture our in-house talent, helping our people to develop as professionals and as people.

We pool expertise from across our offices to ensure the best possible balance of skills for a given project, and are always happy to work collaboratively as part of an extended team.

Laurie Chetwood

Laurie Chetwood

Laurie founded Chetwoods in 1988 and continues to lead the practice as Chairman and head of our creative Studio.  His driving force is the avoidance of bland architectural solutions, steering the practice to explore and develop creativity and innovation.

His philosophy is based on a non-formulaic approach to design, often taking precedent from nature and utilising psychological profiling as an essential part of the brief-making process. His work combines the practicalities of everyday living with the emotional ingredients that make a complete design solution.

Laurie’s art was exhibited in the V&A’s Zoomorphic Design and Living Architecture. His work is regularly selected for exhibition at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and has been awarded Best Architectural Drawing. He has won three Gold Medals for ground breaking show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He lectures regularly on art and architecture and has been a visiting examiner at Birmingham University School of Architecture, and the University of Wolverhampton.

Tim Ward

Tim Ward

As Managing Director of Chetwoods, Tim takes responsibility for project control and delivery, along with managing all commercial aspects of the practice. His wide-ranging experience includes research and development, environmental, wellbeing, commercial, leisure, and logistics/industrial in the public and private sectors.

He has been instrumental in developing groundbreaking state-of-the-art environmental and regenerative schemes for the practice and now heads up Thrive, our in-house team of environmental specialists.

Tim’s passion for environmental design helped to inspire the Eco-template study which led to Chatterley Valley’s Outstanding BREEAM Award, the first in the world to achieve this recognition. He is currently working on a number of projects, including the pilot study for WELL Industrial, that will deliver significant improvements in environmental performance, while achieving substantial cost in use savings for the operators.

Tim is actively involved with the UKGBC, regularly attending seminars on sustainability and environmental initiatives – knowledge that is fed back to the practice and our projects.

Clive White

Clive White

Clive has worked at Chetwoods since 1990 and has been instrumental in the development and growth of the company. He has played a significant role in many of the practice’s most important projects, particularly on complex sites where planning issues demand a particularly high level of response.

Clive’s expertise lies in the design, development and construction of complex schemes covering a variety of sectors including urban design and regeneration as well as commercial office space, residential, retail and leisure projects. Clive is Chetwoods account manager for a number of the practice’s high profile masterplanning developments, an area of design in which he specialises.

He is passionate about design and is keen to ensure that buildings are delivered with a consistent approach from concept to completion, whilst his practical and detail orientated approach enables him to add value to projects in the hugely important transitional phases between concept, design and delivery.
