The open ideas AJ/Crown Estate Future Office competition asked architects and designers to respond to the challenge of designing an office space operating in 2020 and beyond.

The perfect challenge for our studio, we decided to use our weekly internal design charrette to develop our ideas for the competition with everyone in the office. Over the space of eight weekly sessions we pooled our creative ideas and finessed our proposal ready for submission.

Following the initial submission we were one of 10 practices shortlisted from almost 80 teams to develop and present our ideas to the judging panel.

For the final stage we were one of 6 finalists selected to participate in a day-long charrette at the offices of the Crown Estate, working up our designs alongside the other 5 teams and the judges.

Each team applied their initial concept to The Crown Estate’s Clydesdale Bank building off Piccadilly Circus, which we were able to visit the day before the charrette.

Our myEstate winning proposal

myEstate is a new office concept which addresses the desire for people to be able to connect and merge their work, rest and home lifestyles in a fluid and intuitive manner. Our proposal turns the traditional idea of working in an office on its head by creating a fully connected estate whereby each ‘hub’ offers the user the very best experience to suit their individual needs.

We are creating a new ‘city village’ for the Crown Estate in central London. Separated parts of the existing Crown Estate will be reconnected, both physically and virtually, across different layers, and revitalised to create living working environments where individuals and tenants alike can live and work in a flexible, connected space.

myEstate will be a community where everyone has access to the best cutting edge facilities. It will function as a flexible club with businesses using customisable space and facilities as and when required. They will be able to pass on benefits and incentives to employees through different levels of membership. The benefits will extend to allow access to similar connected spaces at other sites across the UK.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ assumption in the office of the future. Intelligent software via the myEstate app creates a personalised user experience at every level; workplace ambience, temperature, lighting and IT set up; exercise, healthcare, diet choices, home from home facilities and utilities.

myEstate truly places the individual at the heart of the future of the office.
